Succulent Crassula Jade
Botanical Name: Crassula ovata
Common Name(s): Jade Plant, Money Tree, Friendship Tree, Lucky Plant, Baby Jade
This succulent is one of the most popular and well-known succulents, often referred to as the “Jade Plant.” Native to South Africa and Mozambique, this hardy, evergreen succulent has become a beloved houseplant around the world, prized for its thick, fleshy, glossy green leaves and its ability to thrive in a variety of conditions with minimal care. The leaves are typically oval or spoon-shaped, with a smooth, waxy texture that gives them a shiny, jade-like appearance. As the plant matures, it may develop a tree-like form with a thick trunk and branches, making it a striking addition to any home or garden.
It is known for its symbolism in various cultures. It is often regarded as a symbol of good luck, prosperity, and friendship, which is why it’s commonly referred to as the "Money Tree" or "Lucky Plant." Its easy-to-care-for nature and attractive appearance make it a popular choice for indoor gardens, offices, or even as a decorative accent in outdoor spaces in warmer climates.
This plant grows slowly, reaching heights of up to 3 feet (90 cm) indoors, though its growth can be controlled with occasional pruning. It has small, star-shaped white or pinkish flowers that typically appear in winter or early spring, though it is more often grown for its beautiful foliage rather than its blooms. The flowers are produced in small clusters on tall stems and may add a delicate touch of color to the plant when it blooms.
The Succulent Crassula Jade thrives in bright, indirect light and is relatively tolerant of varying light conditions. It can tolerate some direct sunlight but should be protected from intense afternoon sun, which can scorch its leaves. Placing the plant near a south- or west-facing window is ideal, but it can also adapt to lower light conditions, though its growth may slow, and it may become leggy. A few hours of direct morning sun is usually sufficient to keep the plant healthy and encourage compact, bushy growth.
Like most succulents, this one is drought-tolerant and prefers well-draining soil that allows water to quickly drain away from its roots. During the winter months, reduce watering, as the plant enters a period of dormancy and requires less water.
This plant prefers a warm environment with temperatures between 60–75°F (16–24°C) and can tolerate periods of heat. However, it should be protected from frost, as it is not cold-hardy. If grown outdoors in regions with cold winters, it should be brought indoors when temperatures drop below 50°F (10°C). Over time, the jade plant can develop a small trunk and become tree-like, adding an architectural element to your indoor space.
Note: This succulent is non-toxic to pets, making it a safe choice for homes with dogs and cats.
