Pothos Lemon Top

Botanical Name: Epipremnum aureum 'Lemon Top'
Common Name(s): Lemon Top Pothos, Golden Pothos (variegated)

The Pothos Lemon Top is a vibrant and eye-catching cultivar, known for its heart-shaped leaves and easy care. This particular variety stands out for its striking yellow and cream variegation, which gives the plant a bright, cheerful look. The leaves are typically green with splashes of yellow, often more intense in new growth. The variegation resembles a “lemony” color, which is how this variety got its name. Like other Pothos varieties, the Lemon Top is a vigorous grower, with vines that can cascade or climb, making it an excellent choice for hanging baskets, shelves, or trellises.

Native to the Solomon Islands, the Pothos Lemon Top thrives in both indoor and outdoor environments, making it one of the most popular houseplants worldwide. It is particularly known for its adaptability to low light conditions, though it grows best with bright, indirect light, which helps maintain the intensity of its variegated colors. In lower light, the yellow variegation may be less pronounced, and the plant may become more green in appearance.

This easy-care plant is also highly drought-tolerant, as it can store water in its thick, waxy leaves. However, it should be watered thoroughly when the soil becomes dry to the touch. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it's important to allow the soil to dry out between waterings.  It prefers well-draining soil, which can be achieved with a standard potting mix or a mix designed for houseplants.

If growing it as a hanging plant, the trailing vines can be pruned to control its growth and encourage bushier foliage. It can also be propagated easily through stem cuttings in water or soil, making it a great plant for sharing with friends or expanding your own collection.

Note: While this Pothos is generally non-toxic to humans, it is toxic to pets, especially cats and dogs. It's best to place this plant out of reach of curious pets.

Care Insights & Expert Tips

  1. Fertilize regularly: Feed your Pothos Lemon Top with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 3-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
  2. Wipe leaves regularly: Wipe the leaves down regularly to keep them clean and shiny.
  3. Provide support: As the plant grows, it may require a moss pole or trellis to support its vining growth.
  4. Monitor for pests: While Pothos plants are relatively pest-resistant, they're not immune. Keep an eye out for spider mites, aphids, or mealybugs. If you spot any pests, treat the plant with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
