Nematanthus Black Goldfish

Botanical Name: Nematanthus wettsteinii

Common Name(s): Black Goldfish Plant, Goldfish Plant

The Black Goldfish Plant is a unique, trailing tropical plant named for its tubular, dark orange-red flowers that resemble tiny goldfish. Native to Brazil, this plant features glossy, dark green leaves and typically grows well in hanging baskets or pots where its vines can cascade. When in bloom, the vibrant flowers provide a stunning contrast to its dark foliage, making it an eye-catching choice for indoor displays.

This plant thrives in bright, indirect light, which helps encourage more blooms, although it can adapt to moderate light conditions. It prefers well-draining, slightly acidic soil and should be watered when the top inch of soil feels dry. High humidity is ideal for Nematanthus, as it mimics its tropical origins, and it can benefit from occasional misting.

Air Purifying Qualities: The Black Goldfish Plant can help improve indoor air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, contributing to a fresher environment.

Note: The Black Goldfish Plant is generally non-toxic, making it a pet-friendly choice for homes with animals. However, as with any plant, it’s best to keep an eye on pets to prevent any unwanted nibbling.

Care Insights & Expert Tips

  1. Fertilizing Needs: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer to encourage blooms. Reduce fertilizing in fall and stop altogether in winter.
  2. Pruning Tips: Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth. Use sterilized scissors to remove leggy or damaged stems.
  3. Repotting Frequency: Repot every 2-3 years, preferably in spring, using a well-draining potting mix.
  4. Pest Management: Monitor for pests like aphids and spider mites, which are attracted to the flowers. Treat infestations with neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed.

FAQs

Do you have a return or replacement policy for plants?

Due to the perishable nature of plants, we do not accept returns based on personal preference. Shipping live plants back and forth can cause unnecessary stress and jeopardize the health of the plant. We encourage customers to choose carefully before placing an order. Our risk-free, 30-day customer guarantee covers cases where plants arrive damaged, dead, sick, or incorrect items were sent. We will send you a replacement plant or provide a refund.

If there’s an issue with your order, please notify us within 30 days so we can address the issue as quickly as possible. To learn more, visit 30-Day Customer Guarantee. Refunds will be processed to the card or account used for your purchase and will typically be available in your bank in 3-5 business days from the date it was issued.
