Ficus Audrey

Botanical Name: Ficus benghalensis
Common Name(s): Ficus Audrey, Bengal Fig, Indian Banyan

The Ficus Audrey is an elegant and striking houseplant known for its lush, glossy leaves and tree-like form. Native to the Indian subcontinent and parts of Southeast Asia, this species is often found growing as a large, spreading tree in the wild, where its aerial roots can create expansive, dramatic canopies. In the home, however, this Ficus is typically grown as a beautiful, indoor ornamental plant that adds a tropical, architectural element to any space.

The leaves of the Ficus Audrey are large, ovate, and dark green, with a leathery texture that makes them particularly shiny and vibrant. The undersides of the leaves have a silvery-grayish tint, providing a subtle contrast to the glossy upper surface. The plant's growth habit is upright and tree-like, with a well-defined trunk that supports its dense, attractive foliage. It can grow several feet tall indoors (typically 3-6 feet or 1-2 meters) with the right care, but it can also be pruned to maintain a more manageable size, making it suitable for both small and larger spaces.

As a tropical plant, the Ficus Audrey thrives in bright, indirect light, but it can tolerate some lower light conditions. However, its growth will slow, and the plant may become leggy if it’s not receiving enough light. Direct sunlight should be avoided, as it can scorch the delicate leaves, causing brown spots or edges. Ideal temperatures for this Ficus are between 60-75°F (16-24°C), and like many tropical plants, it prefers stable temperatures away from drafts or sudden cold spells.

While the Ficus Audrey prefers moderate to high humidity levels, it is more adaptable to average indoor humidity than some other tropical plants. However, if your home is dry, especially in winter, the plant may benefit from occasional misting or a humidity tray to keep the air around it moist. Regularly wiping down the glossy leaves with a damp cloth can also help remove dust, allowing the plant to photosynthesize efficiently.

As a relatively low-maintenance plant, it benefit from occasional pruning to maintain its shape and remove any dead or damaged leaves. If you want to encourage a more branching growth habit, you can trim back the top to encourage lateral growth.

Note: The Ficus Audrey is toxic to pets, particularly cats and dogs, if ingested. The plant contains a milky sap that can cause stomach issues and may also cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals. Keep this plant out of reach of pets and be cautious when handling it.

Care Insights & Expert Tips

  1. Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years, or when the ficus becomes root-bound. Handle with care as the sap can irritate the skin.
  2. Prune regularly: Prune to rid dead leaves and to encourage new growth.
  3. Fertilize once a month: Feed your plant with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month during the growing season.
  4. Avoid drafts: Keep your Ficus away from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
  5. Encouraging branching: To encourage more branching, pinch back the tips of the stems, which helps the plant become fuller.
