Fern Kangaroo Paw

Botanical Name: Microsorum diversifolium
Common Name(s): Kangaroo Paw Fern, Kangaroo Fern

The Fern Kangaroo Paw Fern is a unique and resilient fern known for its glossy, leathery fronds that resemble the shape of a kangaroo's paw/ With its intriguing, wide spread foliage and vibrant green color, this tropical fern brings a lush, modern look to any indoor setting. Unlike more delicate ferns, the Kangaroo Paw Fern has a slightly rugged appearance, with arching fronds that may be lobed or forked, often on the same plant. This variability gives the fern an organic, sculptural charm that fits well in both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Native to Australia and New Zealand, this fern naturally grows in forested areas as an epiphyte or terrestrial plant. It adapts exceptionally well to indoor environments and is favored for its tolerance of average home conditions and relatively low maintenance needs. Typically, the Kangaroo Paw Fern grows to about 12–18 inches (30–45 cm) tall and wide, making it a great choice for tabletops, shelves, or hanging baskets where its fronds can gently cascade.

The Kangaroo Paw Fern prefers bright, indirect light but is also tolerant of moderate to low-light conditions, making it an excellent option for spaces that don't receive a lot of natural sunlight. Direct sun should be avoided, as it can scorch the fronds and cause browning. It grows best in temperatures between 60–75°F (15–24°C) and should be protected from drafts, air conditioning vents, or extreme temperature changes.

This fern thrives in moist, well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensuring good drainage is key. Unlike many other ferns, the Kangaroo Paw Fern is more tolerant of occasional dryness but still benefits from regular watering to maintain its vibrant appearance. Humidity is appreciated but not essential, making this fern more adaptable to standard indoor humidity levels than many of its more sensitive relatives. However, in particularly dry environments or during winter when indoor heating can lower humidity, misting the plant or placing it on a humidity tray can help maintain healthy frond growth and prevent browning edges.

Note: The Kangaroo Paw Fern is non-toxic to pets, making it a safe and family-friendly addition to homes with cats, dogs, and children.

Care Insights & Expert Tips

  1. Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years, or when the plant becomes root-bound.
  2. Prune regularly: Prune dead or yellowing fronds to encourage new growth and maintain the plant's tidy appearance.
  3. Avoid Dry Air: The Fern Kangaroo Paw is sensitive to dry air, so keep them away from heating vents and air conditioners.
  4. Avoid drafts: Keep your Fern away from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
