Calathea Lancifolia Rattlesnake

Botanical Name: Calathea lancifolia
Common Name(s): Rattlesnake Plant, Peacock Plant, Zebra Plant

The Calathea Rattlesnake is a striking and popular variety within the Calathea family, renowned for its long, narrow leaves adorned with bold patterns. Its leaves feature deep green with lighter green or silvery markings that form intricate, wavy patterns resembling the scales of a rattlesnake, giving it its unique common name. The edges of the leaves are slightly ruffled, and the undersides often display a rich purple hue, adding further visual appeal. This plant’s dramatic foliage makes it a favorite among indoor plant enthusiasts, especially for those seeking a vibrant and texturally interesting addition to their space.

Native to the tropical regions of Brazil, the Calathea Lancifolia Rattlesnake thrives in warm, humid environments, where it mimics the conditions of its natural habitat. It prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its vivid leaf markings. While it can tolerate lower light conditions, its growth may slow down, and the intricate patterns may fade. The ideal temperature range for this plant is between 65-75°F (18-24°C), and it should be kept away from cold drafts or sudden temperature fluctuations, as it prefers a consistently warm environment.

Humidity is essential for this Calathea variety and it thrives in environments with humidity levels of 50% or higher. In dry conditions, the leaves may develop crispy edges or curl up, signaling the need for increased moisture in the air. To maintain proper humidity, misting the plant regularly or using a humidifier can help. It's also beneficial to place the plant on a humidity tray filled with water and pebbles to create a microclimate.

This plant prefers consistently moist, well-draining soil, and it is important not to let the soil dry out completely. However, care should be taken not to overwater, as this Calathea is susceptible to root rot. Watering with room-temperature distilled or rainwater is ideal to avoid any harmful chemicals in tap water, which can cause damage to the delicate foliage.

Like other Calatheas, the Rattlesnake exhibits nyctinasty, a fascinating behavior where its leaves fold up at night and reopen during the day in response to light, adding a dynamic quality to the plant. This motion, combined with its vibrant foliage, makes it a captivating and living piece of art for any indoor space.

Note: The Calathea Lancifolia Rattlesnake is non-toxic to both pets and humans, making it a safe and attractive option for households with animals or young children.

Care Insights & Expert Tips

  1. Sensitive to some chemicals: This plant is generally sensitive to chemicals like chlorine and fluoride found in tap water. Distilled or rain water is recommended.
  2. "Prayer Plant" Behavior: The Calathea Rattlesnake exhibits nyctinasty, meaning its leaves move throughout the day. They raise their leaves at night, resembling praying hands, and lower them during the day.
  3. Fertilize once a month: Feed your plant with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month during the growing season.
  4. Repot every 1-2 years: Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that’s only slightly larger than the current
  5. Avoid cold drafts: Keep your Calathea away from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
