Calathea Concinna ‘Freddie’

Botanical Name: Calathea concinna 'Freddie'
Common Name(s): Freddie Calathea, Rattlesnake Plant

The Calathea Concinna Freddie, often referred to as the Freddie Calathea or Rattlesnake Plant, is a stunning cultivar of the Calathea family, known for its beautifully patterned foliage. The leaves are elongated and oval-shaped, displaying a rich, deep green with intricate, contrasting lighter green markings that resemble the scales of a rattlesnake, giving the plant its common name. This Calathea is a relatively compact variety compared to other Calathea species, making it ideal for smaller spaces or as an accent plant.

Native to the tropical rainforests of South America, The Calathea Concinna Freddie thrives in warm, humid environments and prefers bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate lower light conditions, its growth may slow. The ideal temperature range for this plant is 65-75°F (18-24°C). Additionally, the 'Freddie' requires higher humidity levels to thrive—ideally 50% or higher. If the air is too dry, the edges of the leaves may begin to curl or become crispy.

This Calathea variety enjoys consistently moist, well-draining soil. Like other Calathea varieties, it is prone to root rot if overwatered. It's best to use room-temperature distilled or rainwater to avoid the chemicals found in tap water.

As with all Calathea plants, the Concinna Freddie exhibits a fascinating behavior called "nyctinasty," where its leaves fold up at night and open again during the day in response to light, giving it a dynamic, lively quality. This, combined with its vibrant and unique foliage, makes it a beautiful and captivating plant for any collection.

Note: The Calathea Concinna Freddie is non-toxic to both pets and humans, making it a safe choice for households with animals or small children.

Care Insights & Expert Tips

  1. Sensitive to some chemicals: This plant is generally sensitive to chemicals like chlorine and fluoride found in tap water. Distilled or rain water is recommended.
  2. Fertilize once a month: Feed your plant with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month during the growing season.
  3. Repot every 1-2 years: Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that’s only slightly larger than the current
  4. Avoid cold drafts: Keep your Calathea away from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.

FAQs

Do you have a return or replacement policy for plants?

Due to the perishable nature of plants, we do not accept returns based on personal preference. Shipping live plants back and forth can cause unnecessary stress and jeopardize the health of the plant. We encourage customers to choose carefully before placing an order. Our risk-free, 30-day customer guarantee covers cases where plants arrive damaged, dead, sick, or incorrect items were sent. We will send you a replacement plant or provide a refund.

If there’s an issue with your order, please notify us within 30 days so we can address the issue as quickly as possible. To learn more, visit 30-Day Customer Guarantee. Refunds will be processed to the card or account used for your purchase and will typically be available in your bank in 3-5 business days from the date it was issued.
