Anthurium Veitchii

Botanical Name: Anthurium veitchii
Common Name(s): King Anthurium, Veitch’s Anthurium

The Anthurium Veitchii, commonly known as the King Anthurium, is a unique tropical plant loved for its dramatic, elongated, and corrugated leaves. Native to the rainforests of Colombia, this species grows naturally on trees, absorbing moisture and nutrients from the air and surrounding debris. Its regal, sword-like foliage and rippling texture make it a standout specimen, highly prized by plant collectors and enthusiasts seeking bold, architectural foliage.

When grown indoors, the King Anthurium can reach heights of 3 to 4 feet, with mature leaves sometimes exceeding 3 feet in length under optimal conditions. The leathery, dark green leaves are deeply pleated, giving them a striking, sculptural appearance that only becomes more pronounced as the plant matures. Though it does produce flowers in the form of a spadix and spathe, they are relatively inconspicuous compared to its commanding foliage.

The Anthurium Veitchii prefers bright, indirect light and thrives in high humidity environments, mirroring its native tropical habitat. It does best in a well-aerated, chunky potting mix, often an aroid mix containing bark, perlite, and sphagnum moss, which allows for good drainage and airflow around the roots. Watering should be consistent but measured, allowing the top inch or so of the substrate to dry slightly between waterings to prevent root rot. Providing extra humidity through misting, humidifiers, or a humidity tray can significantly enhance leaf development and overall plant health.

Regular feeding during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, diluted fertilizer encourages strong growth and vibrant foliage. To maintain its glossy, textured leaves, gently wipe them with a damp cloth to remove dust. This will also help the plant better absorb light and maintain its aesthetic appeal.

Note: Like other Anthuriums, this one is toxic to both humans and pets if ingested, and its sap can cause skin irritation. Keep out of reach of children and animals, and always handle with care.

Care Insights & Expert Tips

  1. Stem Support: The King Anthurium is a climber naturally so provide support with a moss pole or stake when needed.
  2. Lighting Positioning: An east-facing window is ideal, or a south-facing window with a sheer curtain to filter the light.
  3. Mist regularly: This King Anthurium thrives best in high humidity of 60-70% so mist regularly or use a humidifier.
  4. Repot every 2-3 years: This Anthurium doesn’t need frequent repotting. It can be repotted every 2-3 years, or when the roots become cramped.
  5. Fertilize during growing season: Fertilize this anthurium once a month during the spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength.
