Alocasia Hilo Beauty
Botanical Name: Caladium praetermissum
Common Name(s): Hilo Beauty, Camouflage Alocasia, Hilo Beauty Elephant Ear, Caladium Hilo Beauty
The Alocasia Hilo Beauty is a striking tropical plant known for its bold, camouflage-like foliage. Though often mistaken for an Alocasia, it's believed by some botanists to be more closely related to the Caladium species. Native to Southeast Asia and popular among collectors, this plant is prized for its large, heart-shaped leaves splashed with dramatic patterns of green, chartreuse, and deep emerald — creating an effect that resembles jungle camouflage.
Reaching up to 3-4 feet in height under ideal conditions, the Hilo Beauty adds a vibrant, exotic touch to indoor or patio spaces. Its upright, clumping growth habit and vibrant coloration make it a statement plant in any collection.
To care for the Alocasia Hilo Beauty, place it in bright, indirect light to encourage strong variegation and healthy growth. It prefers high humidity and evenly moist, well-draining soil. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely or become waterlogged. Maintain a warm environment, ideally between 65-85°F (18-29°C), and shield it from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
Note: Like many Alocasia, the Hilo Beauty is toxic if ingested. Keep it out of reach of pets and children.
Care Insights & Expert Tips
- Wipe leaves regularly: The stunning variegated leaves of this Alocasia are prone to dust, so regularly wipe them with a damp cloth.
- Monitor for pests: Keep an eye out for spider mites, aphids, or mealybugs. If you spot any pests, treat the plant with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
- Repot every 1-2 years: This prefers to be slightly root-bound, so only repot every 1-2 years, or when you notice the roots outgrowing the pot
- Use a Humidifier: This Alocasia thrives best in a very humid environment so having a humidifier or humidity tray is ideal.
