Alocasia Black Infernalis
Botanical Name: Alocasia infernalis ‘Black Magic’
Common Name(s): Alocasia Black Infernalis, Black Magic Alocasia, Black Panther Alocasia
The Alocasia Black Infernalis is a rare and visually arresting houseplant, cherished for its deep, almost black foliage and metallic sheen. Native to the Island of Borneo in Southeast Asia, this black Alocasia features narrow, lance-shaped leaves with a rich burgundy to near-black hue that shimmers with a subtle iridescence in the light. The dark, velvety leaves and compact growth habit make it a standout addition to any indoor plant collection, especially for collectors drawn to moody, dramatic aesthetics.
It's a relatively compact Alocasia, typically remaining a manageable size suitable for shelves or tabletops (around 20-30cm tall, up to 60cm mature). To help your Alocasia Black Infernalis thrive, provide it with bright, indirect light. Too much sun can scorch its delicate leaves, while too little may dull its color and stunt growth. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy, allowing the top 1-2 inches to dry out between waterings. The soil should be airy, well-draining potting mix, often an aroid mix containing coco coir, perlite, and orchid bark.
Like many tropical plants, it flourishes in high humidity (usually 70-80%) and warmer temperatures (65–85°F or 18–29°C). Using a humidifier, placing it in a terrarium, or grouping it with other humidity-loving plants can help create its ideal environment. Reduce watering in autumn and winter when growth slows and avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
Note: Like other Alocasias, the Black Infernalis is toxic if ingested. Be sure to keep it out of reach of pets and children to ensure safety.
Care Insights & Expert Tips
- Wipe leaves regularly: The large glossy dark leaves of this plant are prone to dust, so regularly wipe them with a damp cloth.
- Avoid Cold Drafts: Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature changes with this Alocasia. Keep away from locations with heating vents and air conditioning units within 5-10 feet.
- Ideal growth for small spaces: This Alocasia tends to be more compact and slow-growing, making it an ideal for smaller spaces.
- Repot every 1-2 years: This prefers to be slightly root-bound, so only repot every 1-2 years, or when you notice the roots outgrowing the pot.
- Fertilizing during grown season: During the growing season (spring and summer) use a diluted liquid fertilizer every two to four weeks. Reduce or stop fertilizing in autumn and winter.
