    Bunny Ear Cactus

    The Bunny Ear Cactus is a charming variety of prickly pear cacti that is native to Mexico and Southwest U.S.  Known for its distinctive, flattened, pad-like segments that resemble bunny ears, this cactus is not only an intriguing ornamental plant but also a survivor in the harshest environments. While its unique appearance is endearing, it should be handled with care due to the presence of tiny, hair-like spines called glochids that can easily detach and cause irritation.

    The pads of the Bunny Ear Cactus are typically oval or round, with a soft, velvety texture and an appearance that makes it stand out in any cactus collection. They are generally a light green color, and the pads often have small, yellowish or white glochids scattered across their surface. The cactus produces vibrant yellow flowers in the spring or summer, which eventually give way to small, red or purple fruits. These fruits are edible, although they’re not as commonly consumed as those of other prickly pear species. The Bunny Ear Cactus is relatively small, typically growing up to 3 feet (90 cm) tall, but it can spread wide and create a bushy appearance in a garden or container.

    This cactus thrives in full sun and requires very little water once established, making it ideal for desert landscapes, xeriscaping, or as a low-maintenance houseplant. Like many cacti, the Bunny Ear Cactus is highly drought-tolerant, relying on the water stored in its thick pads to survive dry periods. It’s best grown in a location where it can get plenty of light, such as a south- or west-facing window if grown indoors.

    For optimal growth, the Bunny Ear Cactus should be planted in well-draining soil. A cactus mix or a combination of regular potting soil with sand or perlite will provide the drainage needed to prevent root rot. If planted in a pot, be sure to use one with drainage holes to allow excess water to escape.

    Note: While the Bunny Ear Cactus is not toxic to pets, it can still be harmful due to the small glochids that may detach from the pads. These spines can cause skin irritation and are difficult to remove once they stick to skin or fur. We recommended to keep this plant out of reach of curious pets or children.

    Sunlight

    Bright, indirect light: This plant prefers plenty of light, and in most cases the full direct sun to grow and maintain its fresh vegetation. 

    Water

    Water once every 2-3 weeks: Water every 2-3 weeks or when the soil feels dry to the touch. The Prickly Pear can store water in its leaves for extended periods of time. Water every 4-6 weeks in the fall and winter months.

    Temperature

    Warm temperatures: This plant prefer temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C) in the growing months with low to moderate humidity. Avoid sudden fluctuations in temperature or any condition less than 50°F. 

      1. Pruning when need: Pruning is generally not necessary unless you need to remove dead pads or control the size of the plant
      2. Repot every 2-3 years: Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant becomes too large for its container.
      3. Handle with Care: This cactus is covered in spines that can cause painful injuries. Use thick gloves when handling them.
      4. Propagates easily: This cactus can be easily propagated by cutting off stem pads (cladodes) and allowing it to dry and callus for a few days before planting it in well-draining soil.

      Due to the perishable nature of plants, we do not accept returns based on personal preference. Shipping live plants back and forth can cause unnecessary stress and jeopardize the health of the plant. We encourage customers to choose carefully before placing an order.       Can I order and receive plants during the winter?

      Yes, we ship plants year-round! Our shipments are carefully packaged to ensure we deliver healthy plants to your door every day of the year. We monitor the weather across the country and will include heat packs at no extra charge to keep your plants warm during shipping. If weather conditions are extreme (e.g., storm or severe winter), we will inform you of an updated delivery date that we believe is more appropriate.

      How can I change my order details?

      To update your order details, please contact us within 24 hours of placing your order. We care about all our customers and will like to ship the correct item to the right location. We are not held responsible for orders shipped to incorrect addresses. In addition, we cannot cancel orders that has already been shipped.

      If I order more than one plant, will they ship separately?

      Items apart of the same order typically ship together. In rare circumstances, the items may ship from both our Southern California and Florida greenhouses and could arrive in separate packages at different times. For these instances, once each item is shipped, you'll receive individual tracking information for each package, so you can easily track their progress.

      Where do you ship?

      We currently ship to the contiguous United States which consists of the 48 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.

      Do you offer same-day or next-day delivery?

      Unfortunately, we do not offer same-day or next-day delivery. Plants require careful preparation and packaging to ensure they arrive healthy and in optimal condition, we take the necessary time to pack them properly. This ensures that your plants are shipped safely and arrive ready to thrive.
